Bioremediation Assignment
Bioremediation:
Use of microorganisms to clean the environment and polluted areas. They break down
the pollutants. These microorganisms are usually bacteria.
Phytoremediation:
Using plants to clean and break down polluted areas in the environment. This is used
as a substitute of using machinery to take away the pollutants of the area.
ex: Using/planting plants in an area that is adaptable to the pollutant.
Phytostabilization:
Using plants and their ability to absorb to stop the polluting force from moving into
the ground. This also is related to bioremediation as it breaks down or stops it from
moving further.
ex: Surrounding an area that is hazardous with phytostabilized plants to stop the
hazard from moving.
Phytodegredation:
Degrading a hazard down to a small molecule that can't cause harm. This process is also
done by plants.
ex: plant plants in hazardous sites to soak in toxins eventually getting rid of them as
they are not in a harmful state anymore
Phytoextraction:
A step in bioremediation and a subprocess of phytoremediation in which the hazardous
substance is extracted from the area.
ex: The plants in all the other processes. (hydrill, common reed, etc.)
