Ecological Succession Note
Eco succession definition:
1st: Natural change in the type of species in an area. Could either be primary or secondary. 2nd: Replacement of plants naturally through another natural process over time. Primary succession: -Begins in places w/o any soil at all. a. Side of a volcano b.landslides c.floods - Needs pioneer species like lichen -lichen die to make soil on top of rocks -Simple plants decompose to make soil even more rich -Larger plants take over as soil is more thick - Insects and other animals move in as they can be supported now Lichens: - Have symbiotic relationship with algae and fungi -cells are photosynthetic fungus support the algae -Help break down substrate making nutrients for soil -Enrich soil when they die -Change due to environment (indicator species) Secondary Succession -Begins where soil is already present -faster than primary. -Has different pioneer species Climax Community: A group or ecosystem that is a final result of either successions |
