Gasland Response
38. John Hanger, Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection describes the
natural gas drilling and extraction as a “trade-off”. Explain what the trade-off is. Do you believe
this is a good trade? Natural gas is often described as a “transition fuel” and a cleaner-burning
fossil fuel. Explain how these claims are incomplete. Given what you learned from this movie, is
natural gas a fuel that we should explore and extract more of?
If you are making bad water for good water then it is not a good trade off. The natural gas
claims are incomplete because of the high amounts of pollution and contamination in the
process. I don't think we should extract more natural gas as the pollution for this is too high
and risky for many people. It has reached a point where many people have shown symptoms
that are deadly.
39. The Fracturing Responsibility and Awareness of Chemicals (FRAC) Act proposes to include
hydraulic fracturing as an activity regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act. This law would
require the industry to disclose all chemicals used in fracking. Do you think this law is fair and
justified? Why might the gas drilling companies oppose this law? Explain your answer.
I think the law is fair as regulations are set. The opposition of this law would be due to the limit that
the company has to set to keep a clean area.
40. This is a map of Pennsylvania, showing the major rivers and the towns of Dimock and Milanville.
How would contamination of the water supply have consequences for the entire eastern part of the
state, including Philadelphia?
The contamination would run down the running waters into the other states.
41. The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission has released a statement explaining several
inaccuracies it feels that the documentary portrays. The statement is available here:
http://cogcc.state.co.us/library/GASLAND%20DOC.pdf
Briefly describe their statement on the following:
The Weld County Wells:
The bonds connecting Markham and McClure wells water contamination are not present.
The West Divide Creek Seeps:
Fracking is irrelavent and the methane come from bacteria that is usually in these wetlands.
42. If you owned a large parcel of land in the shale area, and were offered several thousand dollars per
acre to lease the land for gas drilling, would you take the money? Explain your decision.
No I wouldn't because those thousands of dollars would go into my medical bills when I'm suffering
symptoms of gas drilling.
Reflection:
Josh Fox is a person that is also affected by fracking pollution. As a form of opposing the fracking company's
actions, he traveled the U.S trying to find people that also were affected. He met several many people and
many of these people even showed symptoms that are lethal to their bodies. He also found that the local
waters are dangerous as it can be ignited. His findings got recognized and were announced at a meeting to
state an act to regulate the pollution.
