Apes: Terrestrial Biomes Study Guide
APES- Terrestrial Biomes Review
Vocabulary
Understand and be able to apply each of these terms.
1. Biome:
- A place on earth with similar climatic and geographical conditions
2. Climate:
-Condition of the weather in an area
3. Rainshadow:
- Dry area on the back of a mountain preventing rain from coming through
4. Windward:
- The front side or place that is affected by exterior force.
5. Leeward:
- The back side of something
6. Latitude:
- Georgraphic coordinates going from north to south on the Earth.
7. Altitude:
- Usually referred as the height or measurement from the sea to above
8. Primary Succession:
- Growth of any ecosystem over a long period of time.
9. Secondary Succession:
- Growth started from an event that is started from an event that largely changes the ecosystem.
10. Tropical:
- A hot or moist climate.
11. Temperate:
- How hot or cold a climate is.
12. Desert:
- A area or biome that recieves little precipitation.
13. Polar:
- A cold climate due to the lack of sunlight on the area
ex: Arctic and Antarctic ( North and South Pole)
Critical Thinking
Read, analyze, and give complete answers to these questions.
1. Describe the rainshadow effect and explain how it can alter the climate of the windward and leeward
sides of a mountain range.
-The rain shadow effect is how rain will only affect one side of the mountain (windward side). This is due to how the mountain
creates a sort of wall that almost blocks the clouds from the other side of the mountain creating a shadow of dryness on the
leeside.
2. What effect does living near a large ocean or lake have on average air temperatures? Why?- Explain.
- Living near a large ocean or lake change air temperatures probably due to the air from the oceans
coming in and out on the seasons. The hot air is stored during in the oceans in the summer and is
released in the winter.
3. Complete this summary chart of the land-based ecosystems.

4. For each category of biomes, give a major human impact and list 2 endangered species:
a. Deserts –
One human impact would be mining in the deserts. This can kill a large amount of life there. Two Endangered species would be
the ocelot and the kangaroo rat.
b. Grasslands –
A human impact that has affected the grasslands are the turning of the lands into farmlands. Two endangered species for this
biome are the black rhinocerous and Grevy's zebra
c. Forests –
A major impact toward the forests are the wildfires started by humans. The wildfires are very lethal towards the food chain and life.
Two endangered species in this biome are bald eagles and grizzly bears.
d. Mountains –
An impact that has affected the mountains are the conversion of mountains into recreational centers. Humans have made
things such as golf courses and vacation homes from the mountains. Some endangered species in this biome are the
canadian lynx and the black footed ferret.
