Natural Selection Guided Viewing:
1: Who was Charles Darwin? What is he famous for?
Charles Darwin was a scientist famous for displaying how evolution might have occured.
2: What is evolution?
Evolution is a change in the genes of a species over a long period of time.
3: What is the gene pool? What are alleles?
A gene pool is a collection of genes combined. Alleles are different variants of the genes.
3: What is natural selection? What does it mean to have high “fitness”?
Natural selection is to be selected to die because of the form of the organisms body. Being high in fitness shows that you are fit enough to survive passing on your genes to the next.
4: How do we get new characteristics in organisms?
New characteristics are due to mutation of the organism which is usually random.
5: How else do we get genetic variability (variety) in organisms?
We get genetic variability through mating and having offspring.
6: Explain the story of the Peppered Moth. How is this an example of natural selection?
The peppered moths are separated into two groups. The industrial revolution affected these moths. Of the two moths, there were the dark ones, these guys were able to hide in camouflage due to darkening of the trees because of the industrial revolution. The other moths were the white ones, these moths were becoming food for other predators as they weren't able to effectively hide. The white moths becoming prey is an example of natural selection.
7: What is the equation for Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium?
p^2 + 2pq + q^2 = 1 is the equation for Hardy- Weinberg Equilibrium
8: What are adaptations?
Processes of adapting to the local environment.
9: What is the best definition of natural selection? (explain.)
Survival and reproduction of the organisms with the highest fitness that have the right genes to adapt to the environment.
